Location and Access

Sarkar Lake Cabin Campground is located in the Prince of Wales Island area within the Tongass National Forest, which is in southeastern Alaska. Access is typically by floatplane or boat, as the cabin is situated on the North arm of Sarkar Lake and is remote.

Facilities and Amenities

The campground features a rustic cabin that is designed to accommodate up to 6 to 8 people. The amenities are basic and typically include:

  • Bunk beds without mattresses
  • Table and benches
  • A wood stove for heating
  • An outside toilet (usually a pit toilet)
  • Cooking facilities (may require you to bring your own cook stove or utensils)

Visitors are expected to bring their own sleeping bags, sleeping pads, cooking gear, and food supplies.

Reservations and Fees

Cabin reservations are required and can be made through the National Recreation Reservation Service (NRRS). A usage fee is charged per night for staying at the cabin. It is advised to make reservations well in advance due to the popularity of backcountry cabins in the Tongass National Forest.

Activities

Sarkar Lake and the surrounding forest offer numerous recreational activities, including:

  • Fishing: The lake and nearby streams provide opportunities for fresh-water fishing. Anglers can fish for species like trout and salmon.
  • Boating: Visitors may use boats to explore the lake. Keep in mind that motorized boat use may be limited or prohibited in some areas.
  • Hiking: There are trails in the area for those interested in exploring the forest, although trails may not be well maintained.
  • Wildlife Viewing: The area is rich in wildlife including bears, eagles, and Sitka black-tailed deer.
  • Canoeing and Kayaking: The calm waters of Sarkar Lake are ideal for paddling.
  • Photography and Nature Observation: The scenic landscape provides ample opportunities for photography and observing nature.

Considerations

  • Bears and Wildlife: As with any camping trip in bear country, it is important to store food securely and practice bear safety measures.
  • Weather: The region is known for its wet weather, so be prepared with appropriate rain gear and clothing for chilly temperatures.
  • Leave No Trace: Follow Leave No Trace principles to minimize your impact on the natural environment.
  • Emergency Preparedness: Cell service may be nonexistent. Prepare accordingly with a safety plan, and inform someone of your itinerary.
  • Travel Insurance: Due to the remote nature of the cabin, consider getting travel insurance that covers evacuation in case of emergencies.

Plan your visit to Sarkar Lake Cabin Campground by checking the latest updates from the U.S. Forest Service or local visitor centers for any changes in conditions, restrictions, and guidelines.
