Location and General Information

Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest spans across the north-central part of Utah, and it is also part of southwestern Wyoming. It is named after the Ute word "Uinta," referring to a place to live, the Wasatch Range, and the Cache Valley. The forest encompasses over 2.1 million acres, including both alpine and subalpine zones with prominent peaks, river valleys, and a rich diversity of wildlife and vegetation.

Types of Campgrounds and Reservations

Developed Campgrounds:

Dispersed Camping:

  • Allows more primitive camping outside of developed campgrounds.
  • No amenities are provided, and campers must adhere to Leave No Trace Principles.

Reservations:

  • Many campgrounds are first-come, first-served, but others can be reserved in advance through recreation.gov.
  • It's recommended to make reservations early, especially for popular spots during peak seasons.

Activities and Attractions

  • Hiking and Backpacking: The forest includes parts of the famous High Uintas Wilderness, with hundreds of miles of trails to explore.
  • Fishing and Water Activities: The forest's many rivers, lakes, and streams are popular for fishing, boating, and other water sports.
  • Wildlife Viewing: Home to a wide variety of wildlife, including deer, elk, moose, and many species of birds.

The forest is accessible by state and county roads, with parts of the forest being more remote and requiring 4WD or all-wheel drive to reach. Winter weather can significantly affect travel conditions, so always check the local forecast and road conditions before departing.
