Access and Reservations

  • The campground is located at the top of Little Cottonwood Canyon Road, approximately 45 minutes from Salt Lake City, Utah.
  • Due to its high elevation and snowpack, the campground is typically accessible from late June or early July through September.

  • Albion Basin Campground operates on a reservation system, which can be made through Recreation.gov.
  • Reservations can fill up quickly, especially on weekends and during the peak wildflower blooming season, so booking in advance is highly recommended.

Types of Campsites

  • The campground offers a limited number of tent-only sites.
  • There are no hookups for RVs, and due to the steep, narrow road and parking limitations, RVs are not recommended.

  • Each campsite has a picnic table and a fire ring.
  • Vault toilets are provided but there are no shower facilities.

  • Albion Basin is renowned for hiking trails, such as the Catherine's Pass Trail and the Cecret Lake Trail.

Wildflower Season

  • Typically, the peak wildflower season is from late July to early August, when the meadows turn into a tapestry of vibrant colors.
  • During this time, the area can become quite crowded, so visitors are encouraged to practice good trail etiquette and preserve the natural beauty.

Weather and Safety

  • Weather in the high alpine environment can be unpredictable with cold temperatures, even in summer, so campers should come prepared with appropriate clothing and gear.
  • Afternoon thunderstorms are common, so it’s wise to plan hikes for the morning.

  • Due to its location and wildlife, visitors need to be aware of their surroundings and practice bear safety, including proper food storage.
  • High-altitude conditions require campers to stay hydrated and watch for signs of altitude sickness.

  • Albion Basin Campground, being at a high elevation, may not be easily accessible for those with mobility impairments.
  • Visitors with disabilities are encouraged to contact the campground for specific inquiries about accessibility.

Regulations and Etiquette

  • To preserve the delicate ecosystem, campers should stick to established trails and camp in designated areas.
  • Campfires may be restricted during certain periods due to wildfire hazards.
