Camping at Elk Knob State Park

Basic Information

Elk Knob State Park is located in the North Carolina high country and is one of the newer additions to the state park system. The park is named after Elk Knob, one of the highest peaks in North Carolina's high country. Camping at Elk Knob State Park offers an excellent opportunity for outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy hiking, picnicking, and experiencing diverse ecosystems.

Camping Facilities

As of my knowledge cutoff date in early 2023, Elk Knob State Park offers only backcountry camping options. These campsites are primitive, meaning they tend to provide a more secluded and natural camping experience, but with fewer amenities. Campsites are hike-in only, which requires campers to carry their gear from the parking area to the campsite.

Campsites at Elk Knob State Park are often limited, and reservations may be required, especially during peak seasons. Since the Campsites are primitive:

• Winter: Winters can be very harsh with snow and ice, making camping challenging and only recommended for experienced winter campers.
• Spring: The weather begins to warm up, but conditions can be unpredictable, and late snowfalls are possible.
