Overview of Laurel Mountain Division

The Laurel Mountain Division is part of Pennsylvania’s Forbes State Forest, which encompasses several tracts of land in the Laurel Highlands, primarily across Somerset, Fayette, and Westmoreland counties. Known for its rugged terrain and scenic beauty, the Laurel Mountain area offers a variety of outdoor activities perfect for camping and adventure enthusiasts.

Camping Regulations

Primitive Camping:

  • Primitive or backpack camping is permitted on state forest lands. This means camping is allowed more than 25 feet from a road, trail, or body of water.
  • A camping permit is required if you plan to stay at one site for more than one night.
  • Group camping also requires a permit, especially for groups of more than 10 people.

Campfires:

  • Fires are allowed in designated areas but must be attended at all times and fully extinguished before leaving.
  • During certain conditions, such as droughts, there may be restrictions on campfires, so it's advisable to check conditions prior to visiting.

Hiking and Trails

  • Laurel Mountain features a number of hiking trails that cater to various skill levels, from easier loops to more challenging trails.
  • The Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail, a 70-mile trail that runs from Ohiopyle to near Johnstown, is the centerpiece of the park’s trail system.
  • It's important to be adequately prepared with appropriate gear and supplies, as trails can be rugged and remote.

Wildlife and Safety

  • The area is home to a variety of wildlife, including black bears, so it's important to keep food stored properly, using bear-proof techniques.
  • Always exercise caution with respect to wildlife, keeping a respectful distance and not feeding animals.
  • Lyme disease is a concern in Pennsylvania forests due to ticks. Use insect repellent and be vigilant about tick checks after being outdoors.

Weather and Seasonal Considerations

  • The weather on Laurel Mountain can be quite variable. Summers are typically warm and humid, while winters can be very cold and snowy.
  • Some areas may be inaccessible during winter or after heavy rains, and snowfall may require special equipment like snowshoes or cross-country skis.

Leave No Trace

  • Forbes State Forest endorses the Leave No Trace principles, so campers and hikers are expected to remove all trash and belongings upon departure.
  • Disturbing wildlife, plants, and natural features is not allowed.

For More Information

  • Visitors are advised to contact the Pennsylvania DCNR Bureau of Forestry or visit their website for the most current guidance, maps, and information before planning their trip.
  • It is also advisable to check for any alerts or updates regarding weather conditions, road accessibility, trail closures, and hunting seasons.
