General Information about Peekamoose Blue Hole

Peekamoose Blue Hole is a popular and scenic swimming hole located on the Rondout Creek in the Catskill Mountains of New York. It's known for its clear, blue water and is part of the Sundown Wild Forest. Over recent years, its popularity has soared, leading to an increase in environmental concerns.

Camping Regulations

GRP, or Group Camping: At Peekamoose Blue Hole, group camping is strictly regulated. It is important to know that camping is not allowed at the Blue Hole itself. If you're looking to camp in the area, there are designated campsites nearby within the Catskill Forest Preserve that provide a legal and environmentally friendly option.

Permit Requirements

Day Use Permit: Due to the increase in visitors, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) implemented a permit system to protect the area's resources. Visitors must obtain a free day-use permit on weekends and holidays from May 15th through October 15th. These permits can be acquired online and often need to be reserved well in advance due to high demand.

Environmental Protection Practices

Leave No Trace: Given the environmental sensitivity of the area, campers and visitors are urged to follow Leave No Trace principles. This means packing out everything you bring in, including trash, minimizing impact on vegetation and wildlife, and respecting other visitors.

Prohibition of Glass Containers: The DEC prohibits glass containers in the Peekamoose Valley, including the Blue Hole area, to prevent injury and reduce litter.

Fire Restrictions: Open fires may be restricted in the area, especially during high fire risk periods. If allowed, fires must be kept small and managed responsibly.

Parking Information

Parking Areas: Parking is limited and fills up quickly during peak times. There's a designated parking area near the Blue Hole, and once it's full, visitors must either wait for a space to open or come back another time. Illegal parking can result in fines or towing.

How to Get a Permit:

Online Reservation System: Permits for the Blue Hole are available through an online reservation system managed by the DEC. One must visit the DEC's website to book a day-use permit for their visit.

Safety Tips

Water Safety: The water in the Blue Hole is cold and deep, which can lead to cold water shock. Always be cautious and supervise children closely.

Hiking Safety: Be prepared for backcountry conditions if hiking in the area, and always let someone know your itinerary.

Wildlife Encounters: Store food properly to avoid attracting bears and other wildlife. Follow DEC guidelines for wildlife interactions.

Given the delicate ecosystem and crowding issues, it's important for every visitor to abide by these regulations and practice responsible use to ensure the Peekamoose Blue Hole can be enjoyed by future generations. For the most current information regarding regulations and permits, it's best to refer to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation's official website or contact their offices directly before planning your trip.
