Location and Access

Elliot Key Campground is located on Elliot Key, the largest island in Biscayne National Park, Florida. The island is accessible only by boat, making it a unique and secluded destination for campers. Park visitors can use private boats or book a spot on a park-authorized ferry or concessioner to reach the island.

Campsites and Facilities

The campground offers a rustic camping experience with a limited number of sites available. Campsites typically include picnic tables and grills, but visitors should be prepared for a primitive camping experience. There are no electric hookups, and the sites are generally suitable for tents.

Flush toilets and cold water showers are available, but campers should bring all necessary supplies, including freshwater, as there's no potable water available on the island.

Elliot Key offers a variety of outdoor activities, such as:

  • Snorkeling: The surrounding waters of Biscayne National Park are home to vibrant coral reefs.
  • Fishing: Anglers can enjoy fishing from the shore or boat, but must follow Florida fishing regulations.
  • Hiking: A nature trail runs the length of the island, offering a chance to explore the tropical hardwood hammock.
  • Swimming and Beach Activities: The beaches provide a perfect setting for swimming and sunbathing.

Reservations and Fees

Camping at Elliot Key Campground is on a first-come, first-served basis, and no reservations are available. There is a fee per night for camping, and payment is typically made at a self-service fee station. Campers should check the latest fees and carry exact change as staff might not always be present.

Season and Weather

The campground is open year-round, but the best time to visit is during the dry and cooler season from November to April. The summer months can be very hot, humid, and are prone to mosquitoes and other insects, as well as a higher likelihood of hurricanes.

Regulations and Safety

  • Wildlife: Feeding or disturbing wildlife is prohibited.
  • Pets: Pets are not allowed at the campground to protect the area's delicate ecosystem.
  • Fires: Open ground fires are prohibited, but visitors may use the grills provided.
  • Garbage: Pack in, pack out. Campers must remove all their trash as there's no garbage collection on the island.
  • Emergency: There are no immediate medical facilities on the island; visitors should be prepared for self-rescue and carry a first aid kit.
