Location

Harmony Headlands State Park is located on the Central Coast of California. Specifically, it is situated in San Luis Obispo County, approximately 5 miles north of the coastal town of Cayucos on Highway One. The park offers visitors stunning views of the Pacific Ocean and a chance to experience California's coastal ecosystems.

Camping Availability

As of my knowledge cut-off date in early 2023, Harmony Headlands does not offer camping facilities. The park is a day-use area, which means there are no overnight accommodations or camping sites available within the park itself. Visitors should plan their trips accordingly and look for camping options in nearby areas if they wish to stay overnight.

Day-Use Activities

Hiking: The park features a 1.5-mile trail leading to the headlands with beautiful coastal views. It is an out-and-back trail, totaling about 3 miles, that is considered to be of moderate difficulty.

Nature Viewing: Visitors to the park can enjoy the local flora and fauna, which includes a range of wildlife, from birds to marine mammals, as well as wildflowers and native plants.

Photography: The park's natural beauty makes it a great place for photography, especially during sunrise or sunset.

Picnicking: While there are no formal picnic areas with tables or grills, the park welcomes visitors to bring their own meals for a picnic. However, it's important to pack out what you pack in, as there are limited trash facilities.

Park Regulations

No Dogs: Dogs are not permitted in the park, in order to protect sensitive wildlife habitats.

Stay on Designated Trails: To preserve the natural environment, visitors must stay on designated trails at all times.

No Fires: Fires are not allowed anywhere in the park, which includes both open fires and portable stoves.

Trash: There are limited trash facilities, so it is recommended to follow Leave No Trace principles and pack out all trash.

Hours of Operation: The park is typically open from 6:00 AM to sunset. However, these hours can change depending on the season, so it's best to check before your visit.

Nearby Alternatives for Camping

For those looking to camp nearby, the following locations are options to consider:

  • Morro Bay State Park: Offers campsites, hookups for RVs, and is located a short drive south of Harmony Headlands.
  • Hearst San Simeon State Park: Provides both tent and RV camping north of Harmony Headlands.
  • Cayucos State Beach: Although not known for camping, Cayucos does offer lodging in town and may serve as a base to visit the park.

Weather and What to Bring

The weather at Harmony Headlands can be changeable, often cool and windy, especially in the morning and evening. Therefore, dressing in layers is recommended. Additionally, visitors should bring:

  • Water: There is no potable water available on site.
  • Sun protection: Hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses.
  • Wind protection: A windbreaker or jacket.
