Location and Access

Greenwood State Beach is located in the town of Elk in Mendocino County, California. This beach provides visitors a scenic view of the Pacific Ocean and is a popular spot for picnics, sightseeing, and exploring the remnants of the historical lumber town of Greenwood, after which the beach is named.

Camping Facilities

As of my last update, Greenwood State Beach does not offer traditional camping facilities directly on-site. There are no designated campsites, restrooms, or campfire rings provided for campers within the state beach itself. However, visitors interested in camping can find accommodations at nearby campgrounds in Mendocino County.

Nearby Camping Options

  • Navarro River Redwoods State Park: Located just south of Elk, this park features a campground set among the redwoods along the Navarro River.
  • Van Damme State Park: Situated a few miles north of Elk in Little River, this park offers forested campsites as well as easy access to a beautiful fern-covered canyon and a beach.

Day-Use Activities

Greenwood State Beach is more suited for day-use activities such as:

  • Picnicking: There are picnic tables available where visitors can enjoy a meal with a view of the ocean.
  • Whale Watching: Depending on the time of year, the headlands provide a vantage point for whale watching.
  • Photography: The scenic beauty of the rugged coastline offers numerous opportunities for photography enthusiasts.
  • Hiking: There is a short trail that leads down to the beach where visitors can hike and explore.

Beach Regulations

  • Fires: Beach fires may not be allowed. Check current regulations before planning any beach bonfire.
  • Pets: Dogs are commonly allowed but must be leashed. Always confirm current pet policies before your visit.
  • Glass Containers: Typically, glass containers are not allowed on California beaches to ensure visitor safety and environmental protection.
  • Alcohol: The consumption of alcohol on the beach might be subject to restrictions.

Local Attractions

  • Elk Visitor Center: The visitor center offers information on the history of the Greenwood community and the surrounding area.
  • Mendocino: The historic town of Mendocino is nearby, known for its picturesque settings, art galleries, shopping, and dining.

Visitor Tips

  • Weather: The weather can be changeable, so bring layers. The Northern California coast often experiences fog and cooler temperatures, even during the summer months.
  • Wildlife: Keep a respectful distance from marine life and never feed wild animals.
  • Tides: Check the tidal chart if you plan to explore the beach to avoid getting caught by high tides.

Safety Precautions

  • Ocean Safety: Be mindful of ocean conditions, as Northern California beaches can have strong rip currents and cold water temperatures.
  • Cliffs: Stay away from cliff edges, as they can be unstable and dangerous.

Before heading out to Greenwood State Beach or any camping adventure in its vicinity, it's crucial to check with the California Department of Parks and Recreation for the latest information on campground availability, current conditions, and any advisories or restrictions that may be in place.
