Location and Access

Oak Ridge Campground is located within Prince William Forest Park, which is situated in northern Virginia, approximately 35 miles south of Washington D.C. The campground can be accessed via Interstate 95, and visitors will find it off of the park’s main thoroughfare, Joplin Road (Route 619).

Campsites

The campground features numerous individual campsites appropriate for tent camping, trailer camping, and recreational vehicles (although no utility hookups are available). Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table, fire ring, and parking space. Some sites are designated for RV use and can accommodate larger vehicles. Campsites are relatively spaced out to provide some measure of privacy and immersion in nature.

Reservations and Fees

Reservations for campsites at Oak Ridge Campground can be made in advance, which is particularly advisable during peak camping seasons. Walk-up camping may be possible if sites are not fully booked. Fees for camping are charged per night, and these rates are subject to change, so it's recommended to check the latest fees on the park's official website or contact the park directly.

Amenities and Facilities

Basic amenities are provided to campers, including potable water spigots, flush toilets, and a dump station for RV users. Showers are not available at the Oak Ridge Campground, so campers should be prepared for a more rustic experience. A camp store may not be available on-site, so campers should plan to bring all the necessary supplies.

Activities

Prince William Forest Park offers a wide array of outdoor activities. There are more than 37 miles of hiking trails and 21 miles of bicycle-accessible roads and trails. Visitors can also enjoy wildlife viewing, bird watching, and partaking in educational programs offered by the park. Oak Ridge Campground serves as a convenient starting point for these activities.

Firewood Policy

To prevent the spread of invasive insects and diseases, bringing outside firewood is discouraged or may even be prohibited. Campers should purchase firewood locally or collect dead and down wood from the forest floor in accordance with park regulations.

Rules and Regulations

  • Quiet hours are typically enforced to ensure a peaceful environment for all campers.
  • Alcohol may be restricted or prohibited; check the current regulations.
  • Pets are allowed but must be kept on a leash at all times and should not be left unattended.
  • Wildlife should not be fed, and all food items should be secured to avoid attracting animals to the campsite.

Weather and Seasonal Considerations

Because of its proximity to Washington D.C., the campground experiences a four-season climate. Summers can be hot and humid, while spring and fall offer milder weather, which may be ideal for camping and outdoor activities. Winters can be cold, and the campground may have limited services outside the peak season.

Campers should always check the weather forecast and park advisories before their visit to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience, as conditions can affect road access, trail availability, and campground operations.
